Touring the Great Basin

I've been trying to figure out why the trip to Nevada was so exhausting, after all it was a mere 48 hours of travel with colleagues I would happily spend both work and personal time with.  It took me longer to recover than it did to make the trip.  Maybe it was just that the range of landscapes.

We started with John Ascuaga's Nugget. A marvel of light bulbs and mirrors. Our first night was spent in the west tower. What you cannot tell from the picture is that John Ascuaga's Nugget is surrounded by highways. Which means fancy rooms surrounded by highways. Sleeping at John Ascuaga's Nugget is a lot like trying to sleep through a NASCAR event.

But a night in Reno is worth it if only for the breakfast at Peg's Glorified Eggs, a must for any visit to Reno!!

Followed by a lot of driving, starting with Bridgeport Reservoir in California.

With an overnight stop at the Copper Inn in Yerington, NV.  Which makes John Ascuaga's Nugget, look like high end accommodations.  Non-smoking room?  As if.

With dinner at El Superior Restaurant, a worthy stop if indeed you have to be in Yerington, and a little bowling, where Joy and I were the only women in a packed house.

Next stop, Walker Lake.  The location where I'm standing is where the lake level was when irrigation first started in the Walker Basin, 100 years ago.  The lake level is now about 125 feet lower, and several hundred yards away.

We covered a mere 373 miles in 2 days of driving.  I guess that's enough to wear a person out!
