Okay, so we didn't listen. I stopped checking the weather before
traveling here years ago. We enjoy such a mild climate, that even
winter weather advisories never mean all that much. So Monday morning
we got up early to drive to Seattle for two days of meetings. It poured
rain most of the drive. I knew it was bad when Don started mumbling
about how he should have stayed home and how he was never driving in the
rain again. Hello!? Never drive in the rain again? This is western
Washington. What are you going to do, walk? Anyway, we made it
through, only about an extra half hour or so. Turns out we missed the
really good stuff. Water everywhere, up to the headlights and deeper.
Water over the roadway, sandbagging and finally, road closures. I5 is
closed for 20 miles, from Olympia through Centralia. WSDOT is telling
everyone to stay home and rerouting those who are silly enough through
Yakima! That's a 440 mile detour for a 180 mile drive. Not to be sent
on a wild goose chase, we're on our way back to Camas now on the back
roads. We're safe and mostly dry. The sun is out and traffic is light.
We should be home ahead of schedule.
