Bailey was giving me a hard time yesterday, since we don't have a tree (well we do, but it's only a foot high and it doesn't have any decorations on it), we don't have lights on the house (well we do, they've been up for a year, but Don hasn't figured out how to get them to light up), and we don't have any decorations up (although I did make Don drag the box out from the bottom, back corner of the storage unit and it's now in the middle of the laundry room taking up space). Since we are leaving soon to spend Christmas in Spokane, and the girls will be with their mom on Christmas, and there's 1,001 other things to be done, I just couldn't muster up the spirit to decorate. Plus, the apartment is small. I spend a lot of time emptying the living room of stuff so I can walk through the house unimpeded. Seems counter intuitive to introduce more stuff in the spirit of the holiday. That would send me right over the edge! To appease Bailey's need to decorate, we decorated gingerbread houses today. When we moved the kitchen to the pantry, I found bags of halloween / easter / birthday / whatever candy dating back to when we moved in, maybe even before. Perfect! We whipped up some royal icing (I learned 2 lessons from last year--first, stock up on merange powder in the summer because there won't be a can of it to be found county wide come December, and second, make the icing in batches!), broke out the graham crackers (no delayed gratification in the form of homemade gingerbread, who has three days?), and got busy. Of course, I didn't think the leftover candy could possibly be enough so I stopped at the candy store yesterday for "few" must have items. Jennifer and Kobe came over to help. Now the house has a lovely sweet smell and the kids are only sort of bouncing off the walls.
Of course, now the 3 bags of candy has morphed into 6. I'm hoping a candy craft material call from the elementary school comes soon!
