Bees Get a Bigger Home

The bees got an expanded home today. When the schedule permits, we attend the monthly Clark County Beekeepers meetings. (Beekeepers conflicts with gymnastics, so when meetings fall on snacker weeks, we usually miss out.) Beekeepers are a mildly amusing and very welcoming bunch of oddities. There's one fellow that keeps over 800 hives. Lots of folks don't have any hives, they show up just out of curiosity (which in and of itself is a curiosity). This month was a score--an old timer was clearing out inventory and had a truck full of bee boxes and feeders he was selling cheap. Papa Beekeeper never could pass up an opportunity to buy someone else's old stuff if it's cheap enough, so he brought home two new boxes. One to add on now, and one for later, just in case. (Somehow, though, this all justified going out today and buying a new bee suit to get into the hive, but never mind that.) If the bees do their job and fill the second box before winter, they'll stay fed through the winter, ready to make us a nice crop of honey next year. I guess that's how it works. I couldn't bear to watch Papa Beekeeper open the hive so there aren't any pictures of that, but I'll post pictures new driveway monstrosity when I find the camera. Some days, I really feel for the neighbors.
