1 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cup flour
red food coloring
optional: 1/2 cup crushed candy canes; 1/2 c. granulated sugar
Mix together the butter, powdered sugar, egg, and extracts until well creamed.
Whisk or sift together the salt and flour. Slowly add to the creamed ingredients.
Divide dough into two halves. Put one half in a bowl and add a few drops of red food coloring. Blend into the dough until it is the color you'd like for your candy canes, adding more coloring as needed.
Roll about 1 t. of dough from each half about 4 inches long. Place the strips next to each other, lightly press together and twist into a rope. Curve the top of the dough to form a candy-cane shape.
Bake about 9 minutes at 375 degrees. If desired, combine the crushed candy cane pieces with the sugar and sprinkle over hot cookies.
My grandpa made similar cookies and had the same issues. For some reason the dough doesn't really want to be dough. They kind of blend together.
ReplyDeleteHe later made sugar cookies and added peppermint extract with food coloring to create them (held their form). Just a thought.
I love you recipes. They are so much fun!
Well, those are interesting:) I think we had the same problem last year.
ReplyDeleteI have a recipe for Kid's Christmas Cookies that allows you to make this same cookie minus the peppermint flavoring. I'll blog that recipe.
