We had a great visit with Grandma Karen last week! She called a few weeks ago to say she would be dropping in for a day or more sometime the end of August / first week of September. Most of you know, my world is scheduled weeks in advance. I want to know when, where, what, why and for how long. Plus, it was the first week of school. And the first week of competitive gymnastics training (13 hours a week--9 for Hannah, 4 for Bailey, no overlapping hours--you do the math, that means 5 days a week for gym shuttle). Made me crazy not knowing when she was going to show up, or how long she was planning to stay. So I ignored it. What else could I do? I did make sure the girls were packed for Tuesday's first day of school by Saturday afternoon, so when Grandma showed up on Monday morning, we were ready! Mom stayed until Friday. We all had a great time. Jennifer and Kobe came to visit with her and the girls got to spend some time with her. One thing about Karen, she's a forager. And early September in the northwest is a prime time for foraging--garage sales, rocks, dried flowers, berries, tree fruit--she stops and gathers it all. When she showed up on Monday, she had gathered a bucket full of blackberries along the way at rest areas. Then Don took us all up river to buy some salmon from the Indians and she, with help from the girls, gathered still more. In the end she made two batches of blackberry jam. The sad part is, she took it all with her! She must have thought we'd stashed some way. Poor Planning! Memory of her trip lingers on in the mud room, however. During her tour of the local relatives, she found some family apple, pear and plum trees. I now have bags, and bags, and bags, of apples, plums, and pears, stacked in the still-under-construction mud room. So as usual, chaos reigns.
