It's been so long, so many goofy things happen around here everyday that knowing where to start is difficult. Karen told me I should just start with one thing a day. (She was talking about the to do list, but if I did just one thing from the to do list everyday, I would be drowning by the end of the week!) She reminded me that I once told her life expands to fill the space you give it, and that has certainly happened here in Camas this summer.
In the vein of "starting where you are," I'll start catching up with blogging the goofy thing that happened today. I wrote not long ago that I got it in my head to try a sprint triathlon. I need a goal to motivate me to exercise. Otherwise, working from home, I soon realize I haven't stepped foot off the property let alone out the door for days at a time (except to chase chickens). I've been following a 16 week Couch-to-Sprint training program I found on www.beginningtriathalon.com. My dedication to daily workouts comes and goes with my travel schedule, the heat, the intensity of the work outs, and my general state of being, but generally I've been decent about following the program. I've just resumed light work outs this week after a two week hiatus caused by a pulled muscle in my back that led to the discovery of a spinal birth defect--my spine tried to grown an extra joint (2 actually) to connect my spine to my hip. The injury probably wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't fainted during the exam and fallen to the floor. I almost fainted a second time when the Doctor was showing me the x-ray (who wouldn't with an extra "finger" in the spine?), but after the first visit he'd learned to keep me firmly seated at all times.
With my doctor's permission, I've put in two swim workouts this week. Tomorrow I get to add bicycling back in (the only tri sport I'm actually good at), then (hopefully) yoga, then finally running (who would have thought something so seemingly basic to the human condition was so difficult, people laugh but it's true--I never learned to run, and still can't really). Camas has a beautiful outdoor pool where you can lap swim from 6-8am or 12-1pm. I go for the lunch time laps of course. My response to are-you-going-to-swim-this-morning when the alarm goes off at 6:30 is generally not a publishable response. So I swam today, then came home to get back to work.
After sitting at my desk for a few hours after swimming, I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I thought maybe I had a sticker or something on the inside of my shorts. Nope. Turns out the goofy thing that happened today was that a BURNED MY BUM. I went downstairs to look and, sure enough, everywhere on my backside where my suit wasn't the sun was and is now a bright red sunburn. It never ever occurred to me to put sunscreen on my backside, it's usually under me and well shaded. It's a good thing my back is better, because it looks like it'll be a few days before I can sit again!
So there's the goofy thing that happened today, and sorry Karen--no pictures.
Oh, that made me laugh out loud! So sorry, but what a great story! Thanks!
